I talk a lot about Cocobolo and other genuine Rosewoods when people are looking for species suggestions for a new project. There is something innately satisfying about the sound of a drum crafted from these materials. There seems to be an extra series of overtones or harmonics present in our Cocobolo drums, although I’m not sure I can explain how or why that occurs.
This is a particularly nice example - a 14 by 6.25 inch Cocobolo with a pair of subtle Pau Ferro stripes in the shell which are also mirrored in the hoops. The voice is rich and complex and the drum speaks with authority at all dynamic levels.
Our drums tend to open up sonically over time, so I can’t wait to hear this drum in a few months - its great now, but it is going to be a monster!
I’ve included pictures of a couple of different Cocobolo beauties below.
