I have dubbed this pair of little firecrackers ‘the Cocopops’. Built for a benevolent client who wanted one for himself and the other for his (legendary drummer) friend’s birthday, we decided on Cocobolo because of its incredible tone and richness of voice.
These drums don’t disappoint - I have done other popcorn size snares which are all brain-splitting crack, but these drums actually maintain some musical character (along with the brain-splitting crack).
The finish is an open pore French Polish which I like for projects where we are trying to achieve a warm looking semi-high-gloss sheen. Another approach would be to use a rubbed oil, however Cocobolo tends to shift to a deeper brown color under oil, while the alcohol based shellac in the French Polish process keeps the vibrant red and orange tones bright.
The hardware includes our 24K gold-plated Stanbridge signature lugs, Dunnett R Series swivel throwoff, and Puresound 1016 custom wires.
Cocopops never sounded so good (with apologies to Nabisco).
