This is sweet joinery - if you look at the Bubinga shell rings above, you can (sort of) see how the individual blocks fit together really nicely and render the glueline almost invisible (on the top of each piece, not the face which has the tape on it). This is what I strive for with all of my joints, because it means that you have a secure gluebond, and that the completed shell won’t have any unsightly lines or (EGads) gaps between segments.
It takes a lot of time to get a saw set up to make these cuts consistently, and I spend a fair bit of that time cursing. The difference in the slick appearance of the finished shell makes it worth the effort though - plus I work alone so there really isn’t anyone to offend.
